In 2008 three photographers, starting out on their careers, decided to keep in contact through a blog page in which they could share ideas, post images and ask each other advice. This has since mutated into a web space where those photographers still meet, but so too do their students and other like-minded photographers.

If anybody would like to join all you need to do is email the blog administrator, Emil

Painting With Time Entry

My attempts at painting with time. In the first shot I was trying to show the grass moving - really tricky and I've yet to get it right. Second image (another, oh look how pretty the water looks with slow shutter speeds cliche, I know!) is 39 Steps in Hogsback. Only problem was waiting for a still moment, so as to stop movement in the red berries. I think we should start adding technical information to our posts - first image 2.5 seconds, F18, ND4 (I think?) and ISO 100 (should really have dropped this to ISO 50) second image 2.5 seconds, F18 with polariser, ISO 200 (which shows I was not really that awake when I took it!).

Hi Neil,

Very nice shots, despite the cliché ;-)! I personally don't think it matters that something is cliché, as long as it is nice! I tell my lady that I love her every day, now that is cliché, but yet she likes it ;-) That said, photography is a form of art though, which makes it somehow compulsory to try to be different, and steer away from cliché things. Yet, in this case, as part of a theme assignment, it is fine, and both your images show that you have a good eye, creativity and master your camera (let's not talk about the ISO though ;-)).
My fault for being so late, but I had exactly the same ideas in mind: shooting moving grass and moving water. My grass shots were super-boring and now having seen your image I can see why: You have a nice, non moving 'point if interest' in your image, (the tree). I just had a blob of green stuff moving and looking out of focus...
Anyways, this morning I had some new inspiration which I am gonna try out this evening. Hope it works! Will post them on Monday.

Cheers Nick

Hi Nick,

Shooting moving grass is really hard. We can all see how beautiful it is in the wind, but translating that to a still image is tough. I have many failures and I'm pretty sure I have not nailed it yet. The image was actually more about the tree to start with, but then I realised that the moving grass would make for an interesting shot.

Hi Neil

I'm not sure why you don't like the grass shot. I personally rather like it. I also like the way that the tree is dead centre (vertical centre). The grass shows movement nicely too. The water shot doesn't quite work for me in the same way as the grass image. The grass image has more mystery.
