In 2008 three photographers, starting out on their careers, decided to keep in contact through a blog page in which they could share ideas, post images and ask each other advice. This has since mutated into a web space where those photographers still meet, but so too do their students and other like-minded photographers.

If anybody would like to join all you need to do is email the blog administrator, Emil

Weaver - hit or miss?

After visiting Emil and Jax, I somehow managed to put my keys in my boot, close the boot and then hit the lock button on the key...? Only I could do this...so dont ask.
Nonetheless I was stranded under a tree of weavers so took some pics...
What do you think? Hit or miss? Tim Matthis

Howzit Tim. Personally I'd say this needs a bit more work. The eye is lovely and sharp which i like, but there needs to be a little more included on the right hand side of the frame. Otherwise I like the shot and it goes to prove that one should occasionally stop on te side of the road to take photos ;)

So you recon crop with more bird to the right?

Hi Tim. I like it. I like it BECAUSE it has slightly unusual framing. It is not your usual whole-bird-perfectly positioned type shot. It has a kinda Hidden Weaver, Crouching Spectacle feel to it. I am not as troubled by the space (as you may have gathered!) as I am with the bit of white in the bottom left. This is what should be cropped which may also take care of the annoying little blip in the white at the bottom right of you frame. Cropping off the base and maintaining your proportions will lose some of the space on the left of the frame but I think it will still work.
Finally, as so much of photography is subjective the market must always have a say. With the bird being cropped off and leaving loads of space allows for the placement of text - good for magazines, adds etc. Oh... and I think E was meaning that more bird at the time of shooting would have been nice, as opposed to your follow up query which centers on cropping post shooting....?
