In 2008 three photographers, starting out on their careers, decided to keep in contact through a blog page in which they could share ideas, post images and ask each other advice. This has since mutated into a web space where those photographers still meet, but so too do their students and other like-minded photographers.

If anybody would like to join all you need to do is email the blog administrator, Emil

What about this?

OK, I am putting this one out there with little confidence. Is this suitable as stock, or should I ditch it? I can't decide if I like it, is it marketable? Winter sunrise at Kenton-on-Sea.

Howzit Neil

To be brutally honest this is not your best sunrise landscape. The sun is blown out a tad too much. possibly blending two exposures might have solved this to an extent. At the same time though it is still a possibility for Gallo local. I sent one in the other day that looks a little similar to this one and they took it...there's also the fact that Alamy takes these images, and they sell.

My biggest concerns with the image are with the exposure, but this can be tweaked a little still. the foreground could benefit from a tad more shadow possibly (the rocks look a little over-exposed with some blown out highlights on the water above the rocks). I also keep wondering whether a horizontal wouldn't have worked better (I wasn't there so have no real idea to be honest)? The vertical just seems to leave a bit too much dead space on the right.

With all that hooha about blown highlights, I'm now going to contradict myself ;), it might have worked better as a longer exposure before the sun rose for the creamy effect on the water. Did you get anything else on this shoot?

Thanks Emil, you have confirmed my fears! There is flare, blown highlights and the composition is not right ... I did try horizontal, but there is even more dead space on the right. I was up against a rock (to my left) so couldn't move any more.

BTW - when I look at Noton et al, they have the most wonderful sunsets/sunrises and never seen to blow highlights. I had some serious grad NDs on this and still blew them. I know you can merge in PS, but the film guys managed it with NDs and no PS and like you I try and avoid PS when I can. What's the secret?

I actually think it the advantage that film seems to have when using ND grads. Yes, the latitude on Velvia is awful, but film just seems to be able to blow out gracefully whereas digital just goes into this washed out mass. I notice that there are less of the tricky shots when Noton uses his 1Ds...maybe this means that he also has problems with highlights blowing. I'm going to post a shot where I had issues with extreme latitude. There are still blown highlights, but i merged three images (using layers and masks) together to try and get that graceful blowout only around the sun. Let me know what you think
